Old Weird America: The Notorious Dr. Crippen (VIRTUAL)

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Description

Join historian Cathy Polovina as she follows her curiosity and explores "Old Weird America," to look a bit closer at a variety of adventurous, innovative, and unusual characters throughout American history.

Old Weird America takes a trip across the pond this month as we uncover the story of Dr. Hawley Crippen, an American doctor who was hanged for killing his wife Cora, a bawdy music hall performer, in London in 1910. When Cora disappeared after a party in their home, Crippen’s transparent lies and the discovery of a mutilated body in the cellar, led the Dr. and his young lover to disguise themselves and flee for Canada. In a dramatic race across the Atlantic, police were able to use modern radio telegraphy to track and apprehend the pair just as their ship arrived in North America. But does recently discovered evidence absolve Crippen of the crime?
