Turns out these Godfather movies are pretty good! The rise of Michael Corleone as Don coincides with the downfall of Michael Corleone as human being, asking big questions about the nature of loyalty, citizenship, and family.

- Lynne Ramsay's debut is a bleak vision of 1970s Glasgow from the perspective of a sensitive 12-year-old boy. For all the rough stuff that happens - child and animal endangerment keeps the tension high - there are glorious bright spots that make the…
- Wallace Shawn sits down for a meal with Andre Gregory, but they chew the fat more than their quail. This movie lives and dies on its writing and acting, and both are great. Rating: PG
House
Hausu
A group of teenage girls, best friends, take an ill-fated trip to a house that's haunted by a hungry ghost. A strange, funny outing for anyone who loves horror or silly special effects. Rating: NR (feels PG-13)- Wong Kar-Wai's debut film is a crime story that cranks up the emotional stakes at every turn. There's an Outsiders-esque tinge to this story of a young man trying to balance his loyalties to his gang and the girl he loves. Rating: NR (feels R)
- A grimy satire on corporate America and the privatization of the police. RoboCop is smart - unsurprising, with Verhoeven behind the camera - and dark as pitch. Rating: R
Ringu
Ring
The movie that made J-horror a decade-long obsession in the United States lives up to its reputation, with a few solid scares and a surprisingly affecting storyline. A good choice for true crime fans, despite being fictional. Rating: NR (feels…- "American Graffiti, but good" is the vibe of this nostalgic movie about Black teens in the early 60s. Fifty years later, Cooley High feels funny and fresh, with late-breaking tragedy to cap things off. Rating: PG (feels PG-13 to R)
- Robert Pattinson gives a stellar performance (with an impeccable American accent!) in a tense thriller about the aftermath of a bank robbery. Rating: R
- A truly breathtaking story of growing up in 1960s Louisiana, where Eve's beloved father proves to be less than the hero she's always thought him to be. Features incredible early performances from Jurnee Smollett and Meagan Good. Rating: R
- Lord Longford believes in the best of everyone - even notorious murderer Myra Hindley. A thoughtful consideration of crime and forgiveness, brilliantly acted. Rating: NR (feels PG-13)
- A detective with violent tendencies investigates a series of murders - he's sure they're connected, despite the fact that they were committed by different people. Think Longlegs, if Longlegs was good. Rating: NR (feels R)
- When Zaffan gets her first period, her conservative Malaysian community starts treating her differently. When she starts turning into a tiger, things get REALLY hairy. Rating: R (feels more PG-13 to me - I think young teens could find a lot to…
- A pop star with a troubled past is a witness to self-inflicted violence from the people around her...but is it happening, or is it all in her head? You don't need to see the first movie to enjoy this one. Rating: R
- A French Canadian model's interest in a serial killer's trial takes over her life. Profoundly disturbing . Rating: NR (feels R)
- Pitch-black humor and politicking collide in this historical piece about...well, Stalin's death. Delightfully uncomfortable. Rating: R
- A pair of Mormon missionaries pick the wrong house to proselytize at. Not quite as clever as it thinks it is, but that doesn't matter when it's anchored by great performances from all three of its leads. Rating: R
- Jeremy Irons won an Academy Award for his portrayal of socialite maybe-murderer Claus von Bülow. A strange, transfixing character study disguised as a legal drama. Rating: R
- When the old pope dies, cardinals gather in Rome to elect a new one...but every candidate has secrets waiting to be uncovered (and no, they aren't related to child abuse). Rating: PG (likely uninteresting to non-Catholic children under 10)
- A Chicago safecracker tries to make good...but getting out of the business to retire in suburbia is a tricky business. Impeccably shot, with an unforgettable performance from James Caan. Rating: R
